An Apple a Day

By Jan Jackson aka One Pan Annie

Apples from the back yard

I love telling people that if food has a label on it you shouldn’t be eating it. Oops! The apple in the photo proves me wrong. Alas.

That said, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” is still a good proverb.

Body fuel includes three things:

1. Meat (or protein of some kind if you are a vegetarian etc.)

2. Vegetables

3. Fruit.

Apples contain Vitamin C to aid the immune system and phenols to reduce cholesterol and reduce tooth decay by cleaning one’s teeth and killing off bacteria.

In a day that adores instant snack food, the apple wins. They are handy and fast.

You can carry them in your pocket and your purse, eat them raw or cooked, peel them or eat the peel. You can also quarter them and remove the core or just gnaw away.

Oh, and about apple proverbs, I also like “Eat an apple on going to bed, and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread.”

Bon Apetit
