The New York Times recently published an article low gas prices causing an uptick in road trips this summer. A recent 2017 Road Trip Survey conducted by the GM BuyPower Card reinforced Americans’ newfound enthusiasm for the open road and more:

· Nearly 75% of Americans plan to take a road trip this year
o 51.6% consider summer weekends the best time for a road trip
o 25.1% say they want to visit a U.S. national park like the Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore or Yellowstone
o Nearly 1 in 5 (19.7%) said they want to go long haul – a cross country trip
· Holiday weekends are far less popular. Only 16.4% considered Memorial Day, July 4th or Labor Day the best time of year to go on a road trip
· When it comes to states, California wins hands down, with 15.4% choosing the Golden State as the place they’d most like to visit – the highest percentage than any other state
o Second and third places go to Alaska (8.26%) and Florida (7.73%)
· 60.9% claim bathroom breaks are, by far, the biggest reason they make stops on the way
· Chips are the #1 snack food for road trips accordingly to 30.8% of respondents
o Healthier options are also popular, with fruits and vegetables coming in second at 17.7%, significantly higher than candy (9.4%) or pretzels (5.7%)
